Thursday May 23 – LTP 506C: Legal Issues II – Enhanced Legal Issues
This course covers legal aspects such as discrimination, harassment, bullying, hazing, and violence in sports, providing participants with definitions and applications within both sports and scholastic environments. It also addresses emerging online issues like cyberbullying, online privacy, defamation, and coach-athlete relationships on social media platforms, offering insights on effective management. Additionally, participants will learn about employment law practices related to teacher and volunteer coach relationships.

Monday May 27 – LTP 501C: Philosophy, Organizational Structure & Professional Development 
This course is aimed at assisting athletic directors set the tone for their program. Origins of athletic administration are addressed in addition to codes of ethics. The concept of “educational athletics” is discussed and refined. The role of the athletic administrator and the importance of having a school philosophy are addressed and workshop participants have the opportunity to interact with others to refine their own philosophies. 
**LTP 501C is the one of three fundamental courses required for the CRAA Certification

Thursday May 30 – LTP 602C: Creating Your Athletic Handbook 
This course is designed to guide attendees through the process of creating a complete and effective athletic handbook. Effective athletic handbooks provide vision/direction for your program, disseminate critical information to your constituents and can save Athletic Administrators countless hours. This is a working course where attendees will be provided with a number of templates as a starting point and surrounded by experienced Athletic Administrators leading the course. Attendees will be expected to come prepared with a list of school and district-specific documents to guide them during the handbook creation process.

Wednesday June 5 – LTP 726C: Student Leadership Development 
Student Leadership Development is an essential component to any successful education-based athletic program. In this course, we’ll look at numerous ways to actively develop leaders who will serve your school as well as the greater community. Topics that will be covered include: captains council, student leadership workshops, service learning, and further opportunities to develop Student Leadership.

The OPERATIONS COORDINATOR contributes to the operational efficiency of the organization through the coordination of various administrative functions.  There are specific responsibilities in the areas of publication production, maintenance of policies and records, management of merchandise distribution, and meeting coordination.

Daily, the operations coordinator works with the executive director, assistant directors, sport coordinators and part-time staff. Frequent contact is also necessary with volunteers such as members of the Representatives’ Council, Board of Directors, committee members, and convenors. Contact is also necessary with government advisors, suppliers, school board staff, and high school teachers and administrators.

Meet Andrew Gilmour, the NWT School Sports Association’s first executive director

Andrew Gilmour is no stranger to Yellowknife, having called the city home since 2015. If you’ve seen him before, you’ll know he’s worked in the education field, most recently with Yellowknife Education District No. 1.

But he has a new job now and it’s one he’s admittedly still getting used to.

Gilmour was hired to be the first executive director for the NWT School Sports Association, a job he started back in January. Since taking on the role, he’s looked after the Cager basketball tournaments and he’ll be working his first Super Soccer tournament this week.

Before he became the new guy in charge, phys-ed teachers would’ve been the ones to organize this tournament and others.

“It was a lot of extra work for them and quite overwhelming,” Gilmour said.

The response to being overworked meant school boards getting together and looking into a proper association, Gilmour added. He doesn’t work for any one school in particular, but rather a territorial sport organization (TSO).

“It’s its own society,” as Gilmour described it.

Every TSO has its own society in place, said Gilmour, with boards and executives who steer the direction of their given sport.

When Gilmour was hired, no such society existed for him, he said. He spent most of his first day at work reaching out to gym teachers and school boards superintendents and getting people for the board of directors to get the society up and running.

“The first month was a lot of relationship building,” said Gilmour.

Despite the milestones, Gilmour seems to have a pretty solid blueprint.

“A lot of what I’m doing is based off what the phys-ed teachers have been doing before me for years,” he said. “I’ve been going to them and learning from them and they’ve been so great.”

Because the job is new, it’s hard for Gilmour to decide on what the coolest part about it is, though there are some things on the horizon.

“The thing I’m most excited about is I’m going to be doing a needs assessment for all of the communities and what they need for their school sports,” he said.

As for Super Soccer, Gilmour said he’s looking forward to it.

“We had 53 teams register for junior and 29 register for senior,” he said. “It’s going to be exciting to see how it all works out.”

While tournaments are nice, Gilmour is looking to do more in terms of after school programs. He’s also looking for growth, both for sport and the players involved.

“I would like to see more events where there’s less competition and more connection,” he said, using an example of a tournament that also features high-level coaches come up and do seminars with other kids. “I see sport as an avenue for connection and growth. I think that would be a great direction to go in with school sports.”

Promoting Diversity and Social Justice in High School Sport: Evidence from Research and Practice

In light of recent social movements around the world that have led many to speak out and fight against social injustices (e.g., Black Lives Matter, Me Too, School Strike for Climate), there is a need to explore how high school sport can help promote social justice. The purpose of this research project is to reimagine high school sport coaching through a social justice lens. In collaboration with School Sport Canada, we explored Canadian high school sport coaches’ attitudes toward social justice issues (e.g., racism, poverty, activism) through an online survey and individual online interviews.e survey as well as individual online interviews.  

High school sport in Canada is a highly popular activity practiced by hundreds of thousands of student-athletes and overseen by tens of thousands of coaches. In this webinar, discussions will focus on examining how we can promote diversity and social justice in manners that provide safer and more inclusive sporting spaces for all participants. Researchers, physical education teachers, and coaches from different parts of Canada will provide evidence from research and practice, discussing the results of studies and initiatives designed to foster socially just sport.

The Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association and T. Litzen Sports/Skyline Athletics, the official suppliers of Nike Team products in Canada, announced today a three year agreement. The deal makes the Nike Championship the official game ball of ASAA football.
