Spring ’24 Esports Survey

CIAAA official esports partner, PlayVS, will now offer competition on the platform for an unlimited number of teams and players at no cost. Starting Spring ‘24, you will be able to compete for free on the most robust competition platform across the largest selection of titles with the most reliable and prompt coach support

Spring ‘24 enrolment is NOW OPEN! If you are interested in participating at no cost, please take the short survey below. Select schools that fill out the interest survey and participate in the upcoming Spring season will have the opportunity to receive a Nintendo Switch bundle* (a value of $650) and/or a game copy of Madden NFL 24 and/or a game copy of NBA2K24 if they previously haven’t received one.

Introducing our Nov. 2023 Athlete of the Month Presented by @BCMilk, Kendra Kelly! Kendra is a passionate student-athlete who, as a gr. 10, is the starting setter on her senior volleyball team. Kendra helped her team to their most successful season to date resulting in their first silver medal at the 3A South Fraser Playoffs. Kendra also serves as an assistant coach for the gr. 8 girls volleyball team. She shows true resilience and perseverance whilst facing adversity, maintaining a positive attitude that inspires her teammates.

Introducing our Nov. 2023 Athlete of the Month Presented by @BCMilk, Justin Comeau! Justin is a dedicated student and volleyball player. This year, he earned the role of captain for the senior volleyball team and led them to an undefeated season in district play. Justin led the team to District and Zone titles, earning MVP. He helped Pinetree qualify for the Provincial Championship for the first time in 15 years. Off-court, he serves as the founder of the ASL Club and volunteers for Red Cross anti-bullying training.

New in 2023-24, OFSAA has partnered with Worldplay to deliver live streaming for our indoor team championships.

Managed using the Vidflex™ video platform, the service enables pay-per-view content (stream & download) on mobile devices, tablets, and desktops beginning the week of November 20th. It’s a flexible pay-per-view subscription model that ensures a shared revenue venture for both parties.

The PEISAA is very pleased to welcome on board a new major sponsor, PEI Mutual Insurance Company!

The package includes sponsorship of the Player of the Game and MVP t-shirts awarded at Provincials, PEI Mutual is also providing the $500 scholarship that will be awarded each year to the recipient of the Brody McCarthy Student Athlete of the Year award.

PEI Mutual Insurance will also be the title sponsor for PEISAA Baseball and Field Hockey in the fall and Softball in the spring.

New for the 2023/2024 school year, SSNL welcomes new Foundation Sport, Indigenous Games.

As the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation approaches, and schools across the province pay tribute to our province’s Indigenous community, history and culture, School Sports NL launches a new Varsity Sport honouring and celebrating Indigenous Games.

This new Foundation sport will be available to all Member schools, province-wide, and will offer student-athletes the opportunity to compete in 10 unique Indigenous Games, at a regional level. Specifically, student-athletes will compete in Seal Crawl, Monkey Dance, Owl Hop, Thong (Stick) Pull, Back-to-Back, One-Foot High Kick, Back Bend, Leg Wrestling, Stick Jump and Bench Reach. Teams of athletes will earn points based on individual performance as well as overall points collected during team events such as the Monkey Dance.

‘We’re very excited to add this sport to our Varsity roster and to provide an avenue in which the Indigenous peoples of our province can share their heritage. These unique games are not only enjoyable to watch but they are steeped in tradition and require great athleticism to master.’ says Karen Richard, SSNL Executive Director. ‘Over time, with the support of our Indigenous partners, we hope to continue to foster appreciation and awareness for these traditional games and the heritage they represent.’

The games selected for the Varsity Foundation sport have historic ties to the Indigenous peoples of Labrador, Newfoundland and Northern Canada. During the long and dark Northern winters, these games helped maintain fitness in the community while building essential skills – strength, agility, flexibility, and endurance – to survive off the land.

SSNL has worked closely with a number of groups on the development of the Indigenous Games Foundation sport including; the Aboriginal Sport and Recreation Circle, Labrador Affairs, Indigenous Education through NLESD, as well as Athletic Directors and Administrators from schools with a prominent Indigenous student population.

SSNL Foundation Sports are the introductory phase of any sport wishing to become an Official Sport through the Varsity Program. This initial level is used to establish a ‘foundation’ of interest from a regional basis, with the hopes of garnering enough interest to transition to Official Sport status. It is at the Official level that student-athletes can compete in a Qualifier tournament to earn their way to the coveted Provincial-level tournament.
