PEISAA track and field championships draws 750 student-athletes to UPEI

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Canada Games Place at UPEI was a beehive of activity over the weekend as the P.E.I. School Athletic Association (PEISAA) track and field championships took place.

Approximately 750 student-athletes from across the province competed in the well-attended event on May 31 and June 1.

Provincial records

Three provincial records were set during the two days of competition.

Eliot River Elementary set a new mark in the novice girls’ 4×100-metre relay with a time of 57.49 seconds. 

Soraya Player of Stonepark Intermediate School in Charlottetown set a new provincial standard – 2:34.47 – in the bantam girls’ 800 metres.

Morell Regional School now holds the provincial record in the juvenile boys’ 4×400-metre relay after stopping the clock in 3:54.66.

PEISAA BALL HOCKEY: Axemen add another title

The Three Oaks Axemen are the kings of the P.E.I. School Athletic Association (PEISAA) Senior AAA Boys Ball Hockey League.

The Axemen defeated the Charlottetown-based Colonel Gray Colonels 3-0 in the gold-medal game, played before a good-sized crowd at The Plex at Slemon Park on June 6.

“It’s definitely very exciting,” said the Axemen’s Lincoln Waugh, who was named the most valuable player of the provincial championship playoffs. “We had a lot of young team last year; a lot of Grade 11s, and getting all these returning guys this year, it was exciting to win with them again.”

This year’s championship marked two in a row and three in the last four years for the Axemen.

“It’s definitely a fun sport,” said the 18-year-old Waugh, who played the last two seasons with the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals of the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) and is a draft pick of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League’s Cape Breton Eagles.

“For some of the guys on the team, we play a high level of hockey and don’t get to play too many school sports throughout the year. Getting to play ball hockey, because it’s after the hockey season, and getting to be part of a school culture team is pretty awesome.”

Backgrounds

Three Oaks head coach Sean MacDonald said one of the neat things about high school ball hockey is the players do not have to be exceptional ice-hockey players.

“There are kids who play at all levels, from major junior to house league to kids who do not play (ice) hockey,” said MacDonald. “The quality and competitiveness of each team is phenomenal.”

MacDonald and Waugh agreed the most important skill for ball hockey players is an ability to run.

“The best part about is you don’t need to play (ice) hockey,” said Waugh, from Wilmot Valley. “There are guys on our team who don’t play hockey, but they can run and at the end of the day, as long as you can run and shoot, that is what makes a great ball hockey team.”

Strong goaltending

Goaltender George Gallant earned the shutout in the final and was named the Axemen’s player of the game in the gold-medal match. Goaltender Christian Cardona received the player-of-the-game award for the Colonels.

In the semifinals, also played June 6, the Axemen doubled the Montague Vikings 4-2, and the Colonels won an all-Charlottetown clash with the Charlottetown Rural Raiders 5-1.

Montague defeated Charlottetown Rural 3-1 in the bronze-medal game.

“Both the semifinals and final were very competitive,” said MacDonald. “They were very strong teams out of the east; we were the only team fortunate enough to come out of the west.

“The kids stepped up. They were wound up, ready to go and practised hard for a good three or four weeks. They wanted it and went out and got it.”

Following is the PEISAA Senior AAA Boys Ball Hockey League history:

• The ball hockey league began in the spring of 2019 as a trial sport.
• There was no play in 2020 due to COVID-19.
• Ball hockey became a full-fledged PEISAA sport in 2021.
• The Three Oaks Axemen have won three championships – 2024, 2023 and 2021.

PEISAA FLAG FOOTBALL: Charlottetown Rural, Westisle win first-ever senior championships

The Charlottetown Rural Raiders and Westisle Wolverines made history on June 5.

The Charlottetown Rural girls and Westisle boys became the first-ever P.E.I. School Athletic Association (PEISAA) senior AAA flag football champions.

“Mostly, I’m grateful they put (flag football) in for my last year (of high school),” said Charlottetown Rural quarterback Zoe Olscamp, the Raiders’ player of the game in a 26-0 victory over the Three Oaks Axewomen in the gold-medal game. “I played it in junior high (at Birchwood), and I was always hoping they would put it in.”

In the boys’ final, also played at Eric Johnston Field in Summerside, Westisle built a 20-6 half-time lead en route to a 41-6 victory over the Colonel Gray Colonels.

“It feels pretty good (to win the first PEISAA senior boys’ flag football championship),” said Wolverines quarterback Eddy Doyle, a 16-year-old Grade 11 student from Tignish. “We were excited when we found out there was going to be a league because we have been playing together for pretty much our whole lives.”

After operating popular intermediate AA and A leagues for both boys and girls for a few years, this marked the inaugural season for flag football as a PEISAA senior sport.

A total of 17 senior teams – nine boys and eight girls – participated in the 2024 season.

“It’s a different sport,” said Josh Blakely, coach of the Charlottetown Rural girls. “It’s very team-driven and in a lot of other sports like hockey, soccer or even baseball, for example, you have players who can take over games by themselves.

“Whereas football, in terms of flag, you have five (players) on the field; everybody has a position to play and a role; everybody has to do their role successfully to have team success. One person can’t be a superstar and dominate the game – you need everybody as a collective group to buy in, and every player is important on the team.”

Olscamp, a 17-year-old Grade 12 student from Stratford who will play basketball at UNB next season, enjoys the opportunity flag football provided, especially throwing the ball.

“It’s not my main sport, so I can just let loose and have fun with my friends,” said Olscamp. “It’s a lot of fun being here.”

Girls

In the final, the Raiders led 13-0 at halftime and capped the season with nine straight wins after losing their season opener while outscoring their opposition 265-71 in regular-season and playoff games.

Blakely’s goal as a coach was to provide the players with a good opportunity and experience.

“When I used to go to Rural, I won a banner playing rugby,” said Blakely. “That is still one of my favourite memories, hoisting that (banner) and all the time and effort and all the hot days you push yourself through to be successful. Hopefully, (this experience will) give them some tools to go on once they graduate school and take that with them wherever they go in life.

“I said at the end of this, 10 years down the road, they will look back and this will be a really good memory for everybody.”

Boys

The Wolverines capped a perfect season at the provincial championships. Westisle went 6-0 in the regular season and won three playoff games to finish 9-0.

Overall, Westisle outscored its opposition 461-74 in the nine contests.

“The core group has been playing since they were seven, eight years old,” said Wolverines co-coach Jason Milligan. “(Flag football popularity) is starting to pick up now in western P.E.I., and for a lot of years it didn’t, and these 12 or 13 guys who played here (for Westisle on June 5) were really the only kids in western P.E.I. who played (for a period). They really came together and jelled really well.”

Doyle, an elite-level hockey player and a draft pick of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League’s Halifax Mooseheads, called Westisle’s victory a team win as the Wolverines worked a nice mix of passing and running plays into their offence.

“Our defence was awesome, and all our receivers and running back got open and made it easy for me,” said Doyle.
