Welcome back to the Coaches Association of Ontario’s quarterly newsletter, The Scrum. This communication will keep you up-to-date on the multi-sport coaching landscape in Ontario. Empowering Stories from Behind the Bench SeriesThis month we highlight Siobhan McLaughlin, who has been coaching the sport of rowing for over 25 years. Siobhan was first introduced to rowing by taking Learn To Row through her local parks and rec programming. From there she went on to the OUA championships, and become coach at Ridley College and the Ottawa Rowing Club where her athletes all give her glowing reviews. Siobhan’s journey shows you never know where dipping a toe into a sport experience can take you later in life. Don’t miss her inspiring story.

MHSAA Announces Scholarship Recipients

The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association is excited to announce the recipient of two high school basketball scholarships and several high school hockey scholarships today. All high schools across Manitoba were invited to nominate individuals from their hockey and basketball teams.

Congratulations to all of the recipients (and thank you to Boston Pizza for providing our celebratory lunch!):

The Garett Lee Sidor Memorial Scholarships were awarded to Harneek Sahota of St. John’s-Ravenscourt School and Darian Giasson of Grandview School.

The Alexander Josephson Memorial Scholarships were awarded to Kaitlyn Davy of Murdoch MacKay Collegiate and Mason Laarveld of Ecole Secondaire Oak Park High School.

Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame and Museum Sami Jo Small Award was awarded to Mika Morand of College Jeanne-Sauvé.

Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame and Museum Ken “Friar” Nicolson Award was awarded to Mason Lesuk of Springfield Collegiate Institute.

The Fred Stevenson Award was awarded to Euan Bohm of St. John’s-Ravenscourt School.

Winnipeg Jets Alumni and Friends Scholarships were awarded to Abigail (Abby) Warkentin of College Sturgeon Heights Collegiate and Tyson Tarnick of W.C. Miller Collegiate.

STUDENT SUBSIDY DEADLINE IS APRIL 28Please visit our website HERE to gain more information about the OFSAA Student-Athlete Sports Subsidy. Subsidies will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis due to defined funding. Don’t delay –  the spring sports deadline is April 28th




JOIN OUR TEAM!We are currently accepting nominations for OFSAA Vice President. This volunteer position is a one-year term beginning in September 2023. Deadline to apply is Friday, May 12th. Please forward nominations to Shamus Bourdon at shamus@ofsaa.on.ca. Learn more HERE.

HOSTS REQUIRED FOR 2023-24We still require various hosts for next year. If interested, please contact Erik Espinola at erik@ofsaa.on.ca. We are looking to fulfill hosts for the following events:  Girls Golf, Girls A Volleyball, Girls Slo-Pitch, Girls & Boys Curling, Boys A Volleyball, Boys AAA Volleyball, Boys AA Soccer, Boys Baseball, Boys AAA Field Lacrosse, Badminton, Nordic Skiing and Swimming. 

NEWS FROM THE ANNUAL MEETING
Items of interest which arose from April’s OFSAA Annual Meeting:

•Swimming (New Time Standard):  The time of the 35th place finisher from each event of the 2022-23 championship will be used as the qualifying time for the next OFSAA Swimming Championship.

•Transfer Policy:  A new appeal section to be added which addresses those students who suffer from mental illness.



CELEBRATING 75 YEARS!
The 2023-24 school year will be a milestone year!Established in 1948, OFSAA will commemorate its 75th Anniversary throughout the next school year.

OFSAA STUDENT FORUM
Thank you to guest speakers Melissa Bishop (above), Alex Maycock, Jevohn Shepherd, J.G. Larocque, Marc Messier, Camille Sabourin, Lolita Richards and Krysa Huang for participating in our 3rd annual virtual Forum on March 28-30. We are thrilled that 93 classrooms and 2,400 students were able to join us!

  
NEW STRATEGIC PLAN COMINGTo meet the needs of our members, students and teacher-coaches, OFSAA has teamed up with STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS in the formation of a new 5-year Strategic Plan. Planning sessions began in September and next steps are currently underway in reaching the desired outcomes

“BRIDGING THE GAP” FUN & GAMES!These smiling faces belong to students at Eastside Secondary School in Belleville. They travelled to nearby Harry J. Clarke Public School and took advantage of the opportunity to participate in the new “Jumpstart Bridging The Gap” program. Great job teachers and students! Please note that the program has reached full capacity for 2022-23.

The ALTIS Coaching Education Professional Development course is returning for Ontario teacher-coaches wishing to upgrade their knowledge in cross country and track and field specific courses.

Registration will open in June and it will be restricted to the first 50 registrants who use a special code. Participants must complete and send proof of completion by the end of summer 2023.
