Teacher-Coaches are asked to identify one male and/or one female from each school who meet the criteria and encourage the student candidate to apply by the June 12 deadline.
Applications should be sent as ONE attachment via email to brianmaxwellscholarship@gmail.com.
Applications will be reviewed by an independent committee as set up by the OFSAA Sport Coordinator in charge of the scholarship.

2023 NBIAA Excellence Awards Banquet/2023 – Banquet des prix d’excellence de l’ASINB
The New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association hosted its 16th Annual Excellence Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 27th at the University of New Brunswick, Wu Centre in Fredericton./L’Association sportive interscolaire du Nouveau-Brunswick a accueilli son 16e banquet annuel de remise des prix le jeudi 27 avril au Wu Centre de l’Université du Nouveau-Brunswick, à Fredericton (N.-B.).
Twenty student athletes (see below) from the NBIAA’s four conferences received the Raymond Légère Excellence Awards. These students have shown outstanding qualities of excellence throughout the school year while participating in NBIAA sports./Vingt élèves-athlètes (ci-dessous) des quatre conférences de l’ASINB ont reçu le prix d’excellence Raymond Légère. Ces étudiants ont montré des qualités exceptionnelles lors de leur participation aux activités sportives de l’ASINB durant l’année scolaire.
The top two, one male and one female, in each school category, received the William S. Ritchie Excellence Award./Les deux athlètes de haut calibre, un mâle et une femelle de chaque catégorie d’école ont reçu le prix d’excellence William S. Ritchie.

Emery Johnson Memorial Award/Le prix à la mémoire d’Emery Johnson
This award goes to the Most Sportsmanlike Coach of the Year. This award is named after Emery Johnson, the former athletic director of Dalhousie Regional High School and the NBIAA Executive Committee, who passed away in November 2003./Le Comité exécutif de l’ASINB a créé un prix pour l’entraîneur de l’année ayant le meilleur esprit sportif. Le prix sera décerné à la mémoire d’Emery Johnson, ancien directeur des sports à l’école Dalhousie Regional High, qui est décédé en novembre 2003.

Team Sportsmanship of the Year Awards/Prix de l’esprit sportif d’équipe de l’année
This award aims to recognize a team, whose athletes, coaches and fans promote what sportsmanship is all about in every aspect of high school athletics./Ce prix a pour but de reconnaître les équipes secondaires dont les athlètes, les entraîneurs et les partisans soutiennent l’essence de l’esprit sportif dans tous les aspects du sport scolaire.

OFSAA was pleased to help support three new Regional Events this spring which increased and enhanced opportunities for participation. Successful applications were awarded a $500 honorarium from OFSAA to assist with event expenses.
March 24, 2023: Arm Wrestling Regional Event (Hawkesbury, ON)
Fifteen high schools were invited from five different school boards. The event welcomed many special guests, including Special Guest, Devon Larratt, who was on hand as the tournament ambassador. He is recognized as the world champion and the best known arm wrestler on the planet. More than 150 students took part in this OFSAA Regional Event at École secondaire catholique régionale de Hawkesbury.
April 3, 2023: Cheerleading Regional Event (Four locations)

April 6, 2023: Ringette Regional Event (Tillsonburg, ON)
Glendale High School hosted the inaugural Gemini Classic Ringette Tournament at the Tillsonburg Community Center.
Eight teams stretching from Goderich to Niagara Falls took part in the one-day event. Teams competed in 2-pools in a round robin format. The top 2 teams from each pool moved on to the semi-final rounds. Winners of these semi-final games competed in a final championship game where St. Mary’s defeated Dorchester (Sutton), 2-1.
Glendale finished 3-0 in the round robin playoff with wins over East Elgin, A.N. Myer (Niagara) and Dorchester (Lindsay). The semi-final match-up was the fourth game of the day and the Gems simply ran out of steam, falling behind 4-1 to Dorchester (Sutton) early on in the game, but were able to battle back within one as time expired.
This event was a huge success and would not be possible without the support and contributions from community sponsors at Zehrs Tillsonburg, Tillsonview Fairways, The Tillsonburg Legion, Service Master Tillsonburg and Michael and Christina Gazley from Tim Hortons.
A special thanks to the Tillsonburg Ringette Association, the volunteers, and the Tillsonburg Community Center staff, specifically Rebecca Turrill, for making this event run effortlessly.

These awards recognize and celebrate leaders, coaches, administrators, and officials for their commitment and dedication to BC School Sports, both on and off the field of play.
Through endless hours of servant leadership, these recipients ensure school sport is a possibility for student-athletes. HONOUR AWARD
ANNEMARIE WATTS (VALLEYVIEW SECONDARY) The Honour Award is the highest form of distinction BCSS can bestow upon an individual. This award is presented to an individual in recognition of a lifetime of service to school sports. The recipient is an individual who has demonstrated prolonged and distinguished service to BC School Sports, their zone, local association, and school. This person has made a significant difference to BCSS and the impact it has on the lives of student-athletes and our member schools.
WOMEN IN SPORTS & LEADERSHIP AWARD
ASHLYEN SINGH (RICK HANSEN SECONDARY) This award is to recognize the service and leadership of women in school sports. The recipient is a role model to colleagues and student-athletes alike. The recipient has made a tangible impact on school sport and has demonstrated commitment to their student-athletes, their school, and their sport.
MEDIA PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD
HOWARD TSUMURA (VARSITY LETTERS) Recognizing an individual in the media who has highlighted and celebrated school sport in their reporting. The nominee has continued to bring attention to BCSS, its member schools and student-athletes by showcasing the very best of school sport in BC. The recipient may be employed by traditional media outlets, but those who use blogs, social media, podcasts, or other emerging platforms to consistently promote school sports may be considered.
INSPIRATIONAL SCHOOL AWARD
CLAREMONT SECONDARY Recognizing a school whose special commitment to improving the lives of student-athletes and staff through leadership and public service. This school has contributed significantly to the welfare of school athletics and the local community.
CITATION OF EXCELLENCE AWARD – COACH
• DEAN FRANCKS (KALAMALKA SECONDARY) • TESSA KUBICEK (OAK BAY HIGH) • TIM MURDY (SHAWNIGAN LAKE SCHOOL) Recognizing outstanding coaches and their distinguished contributions to their sport and athletes. The recipient of this award guides student-athletes to success through the philosophy of fair play and sportsmanship for a sustained period, while displaying values consistent with BCSS and school sport.

• KARN DHILLON(BASKETBALL) • FIRST 3-WOMAN OFFICIATING CREW IN PROVINCIAL FINAL (DARCY WILLIAMSON, GILDA LOHR, MAREESA KELLY – BASKETBALL) • WALTER BECKER(FOOTBALL) Recognizing outstanding individuals and their distinguished contributions to the officiating of school sport. The recipient of this award has demonstrated outstanding commitment to school sport, being recognized as a quality official, while displaying the values of BCSS and fair play.
CITATION OF EXCELLENCE AWARD – ADMINISTRATOR
CHRIS KENNEDY (SUPERINTENDENT, WEST VANCOUVER SCHOOL DISTRICT) Recognizing the invaluable contributions from administrators to school sport. The recipient has shown demonstrable leadership and sustainable support to athletic programs, athletic directors and coaches while contributing to the promotion and enhancement of athletic programs and the student-athlete experience at the school and/or district level.
CITATION OF EXCELLENCE AWARD – ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
• GERALD LAMBERT (SOUTHRIDGE SCHOOL) • JODY VOSPER(SA-HALI SECONDARY) Recognizing the outstanding individuals for excellence as an athletic director and the hard work and dedication shown to improve the student-athlete experience, enhance the school’s athletic program, and build the school community at large. The Athletic Director leads by example and consistently demonstrates the values of their school and BC School Sports while finding new creative ways to support their coaches and student-athletes.
