He is recognized as the world champion and the best known arm wrestler on the planet. More than 150 students took part in this OFSAA Regional Event at École secondaire catholique régionale de Hawkesbury.

April 6, 2023: Ringette Regional Event (Tillsonburg, ON)

Glendale High School hosted the inaugural Gemini Classic Ringette Tournament at the Tillsonburg Community Center.

Eight teams stretching from Goderich to Niagara Falls took part in the one-day event. Teams competed in 2-pools in a round robin format. The top 2 teams from each pool moved on to the semi-final rounds. Winners of these semi-final games competed in a final championship game where St. Mary’s defeated Dorchester (Sutton), 2-1.

Glendale finished 3-0 in the round robin playoff with wins over East Elgin, A.N. Myer (Niagara) and Dorchester (Lindsay). The semi-final match-up was the fourth game of the day and the Gems simply ran out of steam, falling behind 4-1 to Dorchester (Sutton) early on in the game, but were able to battle back within one as time expired.

This event was a huge success and would not be possible without the support and contributions from community sponsors at Zehrs Tillsonburg, Tillsonview Fairways, The Tillsonburg Legion, Service Master Tillsonburg and Michael and Christina Gazley from Tim Hortons.

A special thanks to the Tillsonburg Ringette Association, the volunteers, and the Tillsonburg Community Center staff, specifically Rebecca Turrill, for making this event run effortlessly.

NBIAA/ASINB 2022-2023 AWARDS

The New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association is pleased to host its 16th Annual NBIAA Awards Banquet onThursday, April 27th at the University of New Brunswick, Wu Centre in Fredericton.

Twenty student athletes (listed below) from the NBIAA’s four conferences have been selected to receive the Raymond Légère Excellence Awards. These students have shown outstanding qualities throughout the school year while participating in NBIAA sports.

These awards are named in honour of Raymond Légère, a member of the Moncton’s Wall of Fame as a builder. Raymond taught physical education in many schools in New Brunswick. His love for coaching was only overshadowed by his love of physical education and the values it taught young people. He was the director of physical education for years at Vanier High School and École Mathieu-Martin.

The top two student athletes, one male and one female, in each school classification, will also receive the William S.Ritchie Excellence Award. These awards will also be presented to the selected top 6 recipients.

These awards are in honour of William S. Ritchie, a member of the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame and a past Executive Director of the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association. He served on the board of directors for Canadian School Sports Federation from 1970-82 and he was
inducted into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997.

Emery Johnson Memorial Award
This award goes to the Most Sportsmanlike Coach of the Year and recognizes their outstanding lifetime achievements towards students and the NBIAA school sports programs. This award is named after Emery Johnson, the former athletic director of Dalhousie Regional High School and NBIAA Executive Member, who passed away in November 2003. The winner for 2022-2023 is James Cole from
Hartland Community School. The Emery Johnson Memorial Award will also be presented at the Awards Banquet.

MCHS hosts 2023 Cheer Provincials; Wolves take second place

Morinville News, by Stephen Dafoe for more photo’s click here

The Morinville Community High School (MCHS) Cheer team hosted ACA/ASAA Cheer Provincials on Apr. 14 and 15, the first time the school has hosted a provincial competition since 1997. The two-day event featured elementary, junior high and high school competitors demonstrating their skills in the Landrex Arena at the Morinville Leisure Centre.

MCHS put a bid in to host provincials back in 2019, but due to the pandemic, it would not be until this year that the event would happen in town. The event drew roughly 16 teams of five to 30 athletes, all vying to be deemed the best in the province. It also drew record attendance.

“This has been quite the undertaking,” said MCHS Cheer Coach Amanda Bulger ahead of the weekend competition. “It’s incredibly exciting and super stressful all at the same time. It’s also very bittersweet. I’m excited for the event to just happen already, so I just stop stressing about everything that needs to happen. But that also means that our season is coming to an end, and I’m not ready to stop working with this amazing group of young ladies.”

Bulger said that the team has had a wonderful season and finished in either first or second place at the various competitions they entered.

“The girls have worked incredibly hard to increase the difficulty of our stunt and pyramid sections in the last month,” Bulger said. “I could not be more proud of them and everything they have accomplished this season.”

The competition commenced Friday night with Day 1 of the ASAA (Alberta Schools Athletic Association) Highschool Provincial Cheerleading Championships. Saturday morning began with the ACA (Alberta Cheerleading Association) Elementary and Junior High Provincial Championships. St. Kateri and G.H. Primeau had teams in that competition. Saturday afternoon saw more high school cheer competitions. High school scores were tabulated based on teams’ two-run totals.

MCHS competed in two divisions this year: the All Girls Advanced Division and the Game Day Division. The All Girls Advance Division was a two-and-a-half-minute routine consisting of a cheer, stunts, tumbling, jumps and dance. The Game Day routine is three minutes and consists of four shorter routines you would see performed on the sidelines of a sporting event.

The MCHS Wolves took second place in both of their competition categories.

The Georges H. Primeau Coyotes took third place in the Median Division, and the St. Kateri Tekakwitha Academy Bisons took fourth place in the Elementary Novice Division.
