The Westsyde secondary girls curling team has claimed first place in a provincial championship, beating out every competitor in the round-robin competition.
Brad Thompson, who coached the undefeated team to a gold medal, said the Westsyde Whundas were one of seven women’s teams competing in the 2024 Girls High School Provincial Championship.
“It was awesome. We played really well. They were focused every game and we put a lot of work in going into this, so it was nice seeing the way they played every game,” Thompson said.
Skip Bethany Evans, second Maya Stodola, third Jacey Hallstrom, lead Alicia Evans and fifth Kylie Bottineau made up the championship team coached by Thompson and Kendra Hallstrom.
“They were ecstatic,” Thompson said. “It felt like a lot of years previous work paid off.”
Thompson said all the players of the championship squad will be able to return next year to compete again.
The NorKam boys team who were competing in the 2024 Boys Provincial Championship also took home a bronze medal out of the eight teams competing.
Thompson said the NorKam boys team was a single win away from making it to the finals.
“They lost an extra end to the team that won that gold medal and that team’s last round-robin game so they were one win away from being in the final themselves,” he said.

The Cheetahs beat the Citadel Phoenix 84-68 in the School Sport Nova Scotia Division 1 boys’ provincial championship game at Horton High School on Sunday to claim their third straight banner.
The Cheetahs also beat the Phoenix in last year’s final and defeated the Halifax Grammar School Griffins in 2022 to win the school’s first-ever provincial boys’ basketball title.
Tournament MVP Mason Thurber was the top scorer for CPA in the gold medal game with 25 points and Jude Cameron (17) and Riley MacQuarrie (15) also hit double digits. Leading Citadel were: Kanan Christmas (21), Peter Napier (15) and Brycen Clark (13).
Only three other schools have ever won three or more straight Division 1 boys’ basketball titles: Auburn Drive (2013, 2014, 2015), St. Patrick’s (2003, 2004, 2005) and Queen Elizabeth (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986).
The Millwood Knights claimed their second straight bronze medal with a 77-49 win over the host Griffins. The Knights also edged the Griffins in last year’s third-place game.
Biori Twishime (16 points) and Fabian Colley (10) led Millwood and Sam Moore (12) and Decklin Palmer (10) were the top scorers for Horton.
West Kings edged Forest Heights Community School 72-69 in the Division 2 championship game at Saint Mary’s University.
In Division 3 play, Kouper Densmore went off for 40 points on his home court to lead Hants North to a 108-67 win over Lockeport in the championship game. Avery Lloyd scored 24 for Lockeport.
Saint Mary’s Bay beat West Bedford 93-68 to take the bronze medal.
At the girls’ Division 1 championship at Memorial High School in Sydney Mines, Eva O’Brien scored 20 points as Horton downed Halifax West 65-46 to win gold.
Ali Oluyole added 15 for the Griffins and Isobel MacDonald had 12, while Halifax West’s Olivia Logan led all scorers with 21. It’s the second straight silver medal for Halifax West.
Auburn Drive 64, Citadel 55: Nashya Brooks had 16 points and Courteya Oliver-Fraser 14 to deliver a bronze medal for the Eagles.
Stella Niedermayer paced the Phoenix with 14 points.
West Kings beat Amherst Regional High School 69-55 to claim the Division 2 title at Sacred Heart in Halifax. Results from the Division 3 tournament were unavailable.
HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Horton Griffins win Division 1 girls’ provincial championship in Cape Breton
SYDNEY MINES, N.S. – The Horton Griffins wrapped up the weekend by winning a provincial title in Cape Breton.
Horton defeated the Halifax West Warriors 65-46 to claim the School Sport Nova Scotia Division 1 girls’ basketball provincial championship at Memorial High School in Sydney Mines on Sunday.
Eva O’Brien led the way with 20 points while Ali Oluyole had 15 points and Isobel MacDonald chipped in with 12 points for the Griffins.
Olivia Logan had a game-high 21 points while Ava McNutt had nine points and Maria Davignon and Ally McLean both had six points apiece for the Warriors.
In the bronze medal game, the Auburn Drive Eagles of Westphal beat the Citadel Phoenix of Halifax 64-55 to claim the third-place medal.
The host Memorial Marauders went winless at the event. The team lost 68-29 to North Nova of New Glasgow on Friday, 74-50 to Armbrae of Halifax and in the placement game on Sunday 72-33 to Cobequid Educational Centre Cougars.
Division 1 Boys
The Charles P. Allen Cheetahs of Bedford beat the Citadel Phoenix in the championship game 84-68 at Horton High School in Wolfville.
The Breton Education Centre Bears, who were expected to represent Cape Breton at the tournament, pulled out of the tournament after the team was involved in a three-vehicle accident on Friday morning.
Division 2 Boys
West Kings of Auburn, Kings County, beat Forest Heights Community School of Chester Basin 72-69 in the championship game at Saint Mary’s University, hosted by Sacred Heart School of Halifax.
The Strait Area Education Recreation Centre Saints of Port Hawkesbury went winless at the tournament. The club forfeited its first game on Friday to West Kings before losing 74-60 to Barrington on Saturday and 79-65 to Amherst in the placement game on Sunday.
Division 2 Girls
West Kings downed Amherst Regional High School 69-55 to win the championship title.
The Breton Education Centre Bears posted a 1-2 record at the provincial tournament in Amherst.
BEC lost 57-40 to Cole Harbour on Friday before beating Strait Area Education Recreation Centre of Port Hawkesbury 65-20 on Saturday. The club lost to Northeast Kings Education Centre 53-38 in the bronze medal semifinal.
Strait Area Education Recreation Centre forfeited its first game of the tournament to West Kings. The team was expected to play in the placement game on Sunday, but the result was not made available by tournament organizers.
Division 3
Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/Academy was scheduled to play in the division 3 boys’ tournament in Kennetcook, but no score results were provided by tournament organizers.
Meanwhile, Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/Academy, Baddeck Academy and Ecole Beau-Port were scheduled to play in the Division 3 girls’ tournament at West Bedford High School, but no score results were provided by tournament organizers.

COXHEATH — The Citadel Phoenix of Halifax defeated the Charles P. Allen Cheetahs 2-1 on overtime to win the School Sport Nova Scotia Division 1 boys’ provincial championship at the Cape Breton County Recreation Centre in Coxheath on Sunday.
Finn Merritt with the game-winner and Ben Bishop scored for the Phoenix while Angus Berry had the lone Cheetahs tally.
Leaf Korthals earned the win in nets for the Phoenix while Ben MacDonald shouldered the loss.
The host Riverview Ravens went winless in the eight-team tournament with a 0-3 record while the only other Cape Breton team, the Glace Bay Panthers were 1-2.

Citadel, Par-en-Bas claim School Sport Nova Scotia boys’ hockey titles
Finn Merritt scored in overtime as the Citadel Phoenix edged the C.P. Allen Cheetahs 2-1 to capture the School Sport Nova Scotia Division 1 boys’ hockey championship on Sunday in Coxheath.
Ben Bishop also scored for the Phoenix while goalie Leaf Korthals stopped 25 shots for the win.
Angus Berry opened the scoring for the Cheetahs in the first period.
Division 2
Dominic Jacquard scored two goals and added an assist as the Par-en-Bas Sharks defeated the West Kings Wolverines 3-1 to defend their Disivion 2 provincial title in Yarmouth on Sunday.
Ben Lyons also scored for the Sharks while Zander White made 21 saves. Owen Fowler replied for the Wolverines.

It’s rare for skiers to seek shelter due to lightning, but it happened Tuesday halfway through the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Alpine races in the Blue Mountains.
Osler Bluff Ski Club hosted the provincial high school alpine skiing championships Monday and Tuesday.
Sunny skies greeted student athletes for the giant slalom event Monday.
Tuesday was another story.
Lightning was spotted over Georgian Bay in a lead grey sky.
“Seek shelter,” was announced and repeated by race officials across the club at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Lightning continued through light rain, followed by hail, heavy winds and heavy rain. Organizers ended the competition and used first run times for results.
“Both race days were met with wild weather and changing snow conditions,” said Colin Scott, alpine ski coach for Collingwood Collegiate Institute
“The Owls persevered and proved that they deserved to compete at the provincial level,” said Scott.
Awards were held indoors shortly after 2 p.m. with medals to the top three finishers and ribbons for fourth to eighth place. There were two divisions, one for athletes who haven’t raced with ski clubs (high school) and those who have raced with clubs (open).
Collingwood Collegiate Institute athletes brought home seven medals: two gold, two silver and three bronze.
Both gold medals came from the boys’ open-level team in slalom and giant slalom. The team includes Finn Green, Ian McKeller, Ryne Henry, Evan Chisolm and Wesley MacMillian. They also won two 2024 Boys OFSAA Alpine Champions banners.
Green also won a bronze medal in giant slalom.
The girls won four medals.Rachael MacMillian won both a silver and a bronze medal for her events.
The girls’ open-level team skied for a silver in slalom and a bronze in giant slalom. The team includes Rachael MacMillian, Genny Rossbaum, Avy King, Olivia Behan-Foy and Fallon Murphy.
Our Lady of the Bay (OLB) won five medals: three gold, one silver and a bronze.
Hayden Copp won a gold medal in the boys’ open individual slalom. The girls’ open GS team won gold and the boys’ high school team won gold in the giant slalom.
Andrew Dorchuk won silver in the boys’ (high school) individual giant slalom and a bronze in the slalom.
OLB athletes achieved three fourth-place finishes with the the girls’ open slalom team, the boys open GS team and with Grace Grant in the girls’ open individual GS (L2).
Barrie’s Eastview Secondary School won a bronze medal in the girls’ (high school) team GS.
