Abby Melvin scored twice as the Halifax West Warriors edged the C.P. Allen Cheetahs 2-1 to defend their School Sports Nova Scotia Division 1 girls’ soccer championship on Saturday at Mainland North Common.
Reagan Wagg had the Cheetahs’ marker.
Wagg struck in the fourth minute for the Cheetahs, who carried the lead into the second half. Melvin tied the game in the 61st minute and put the Warriors ahead in the 68th minute.
The championship is the 12th in 20 years for the Warriors.
In the bronze medal game, Citadel blanked Riverview 2-0.
In the boys’ Division 1 final, Citadel blanked C.P. Allen 3-0 while Halifax West dropped the Woodlawn Panthers 5-1 in the bronze medal game.
At the Division 2 girls’ championship, Halifax Grammar School Gryphons downed the Island View Devils 6-2 to take the banner. West Kings topped Breton Education Centre 2-0 for the bronze medal.
Host Sacred Heart defeated Annapolis West Education Centre 3-1 to win the Division 3 boys’ championship. West Bedford blanked Springhill 5-0 for the bronze medal.

The gold medal hopes for three Cape Breton high school soccer teams came to an end in School Sport Nova Scotia Soccer Provincial Championship action on Friday.
In Division 1 Girls action in Bedford, the Riverview Ravens fell 5-0 to the Charles P. Allen (CPA) Cheetahs, the championship hosts. Riverview will play the Citadel Phoenix for the provincial bronze medal on Saturday at 10 a.m. CPA will advance to the final at 12:30 p.m. where they will face the Halifax West Warriors.
At the Breton Education Centre in New Waterford, the host Division 2 Boys BEC Bears dropped their semifinal on Friday afternoon 4-0 to the Sommet Cougars. BEC will play the Mosaique Mustangs for bronze at 10 a.m. Saturday. Sommet will get a shot at provincial Division 2 gold at 12 p.m., when they face the West Colchester Coyotes.
At the Division 2 Girls championships in Auburn, the BEC Bears were downed 3-1 by the Island View Devils on Friday. BEC will play the host West Kings Wolverines for the bronze medal on Saturday at 10 a.m. Island View advances to the gold medal game against the Halifax Grammar Gryphons at 12 p.m.

SYDNEY, N.S. — The Breton Education Centre Bears and Baddeck Academy Broncos will host School Sport Nova Scotia soccer provincial tournaments this week.
The Bears will host the Division 2 boys’ tournament today and Saturday at MacKinnon Field in New Waterford.
École Secondaire du Sommet of Halifax, École secondaire Mosaïque of Dartmouth and South Colchester Academy of Brookfield will also be in the tournament.
BEC will open the tournament at noon today against Sommet, while Mosaïque and South Colchester will play at 2:30 p.m.
The bronze medal game will be Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by the championship game at noon.
Meanwhile, in Baddeck, the Broncos will host the Division 3 girls’ tournament at Stephen MacDermid Memorial Sports Field.
Joining Baddeck Academy in the tournament will be Oxford, New Germany and Tatamagouche.
New Germany and Oxford will play at 12 p.m. followed by Baddeck and Tatamagouche at 2:30 p.m.
The bronze medal and championship games are slated for Saturday at 10 a.m. and noon respectively.
In other provincial tournaments this week, Riverview High School will be in Bedford for the Division 1 girls’ event. The Ravens will open its championship hunt against the host Charles P. Allen at 2 p.m today.
Halifax West and Citadel are also in the Division 1 tournament.
In Division 2 girls’ action, BEC will travel to Auburn for their provincial tournament. The Bears will play Island View of Eastern Passage at 12 p.m. today.
Halifax Grammar School and West Kings are also taking part in the event.
The junior varsity girls’ provincial championships were held last weekend in Wolfville. Riverview claimed the silver medal at the tournament.

What a day! At the OFSAA XC provincial championships the Neil McNeil xc team won its THIRD CONSECUTIVE OVERALL BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP! All 18 athletes left Centennial Park with a medal. It was a title defence for the Massey Mustangs and a first for the Holy Names Knights on Saturday.
The Mustangs repeated as team champions in the senior girls’ division while the Knights claimed the school’s first-ever division title taking the junior girls’ title at the OFSAA cross-country championships at Centennial Park in Etobicoke. St. Joseph’s Anthony Cigan earned the area’s third gold medal by taking the mixed para 4km race.
“To do it again is amazing,” 17-year-old Layla Masse, who was the first Massey runner across the finish line, said of the repeat. “Everyone was so dedicated to pushing and meeting expectations of last year.”
Three Massey runners returned from last year’s championship team in Masse, who placed 23rd over the 6km course in 23 minutes and 14.11 seconds, Ella Heredi, who was 30th in 23:24.94, and Julia Scarrow, who was 55th in 24:08.54. Massey’s other scoring runner was Grade 9 student Anieu Chan, who was right behind Masse in 24th place in 23:14.67. Vivian Hu, who was 207th, rounded out the team.
“The biggest challenge at being at OFSAA was the competition and the course and I couldn’t have done this without my amazing teammates,” the 14-year-old Chan said. “I just feel like we’re a team and we just wanted to keep pushing. I’ve never experienced an event like this.”
In a race that started with 275 runners, Masse said it was a matter of team members picking each other up along the way.
“Anieu and I helped each other,” Masse said. “There was a point where I caught up to her and she was hurting and I said, ‘Do it for the team’ and then, when I started hurting, Anieu pushed me on. It was great that we pushed each other to the end of the line and Ella came up and pushed us, too.”
Massey’s team score of 132 was 72 points ahead of its closest rival and the Knights were just as dominant in winning the junior girls’ title with 115 points, which was 79 points ahead of the second-place team.
“I was hoping for this to happen,” said the Knights’ Sophia Prantera, who led the team with a sixth-place finish overall over the 5km course in 17:26.43. “We were fifth last year (in the novice division) and we were hoping for it.”
The 15-year-old Prantera called it a challenging course.
“The course was so hard,” Prantera said. “There was so much gravel, my feet were killing me.
“You never know how a race is going to go and I’m super excited. Usually at the start, you can tell how it goes. At the start, I got out in third place and I knew it was going to be a good race.”
Kacie Gelinas was 23rd in 18:24.51, Makenna St. Louis was 39th in 18:50.81 and Emily Owen completed the team’s four scoring runners with a 47th-place finish in 19:10.74. Lyla Mascaro, who was 191st, rounded out the team.
“It means so much because I’ve been training,” Prantera said. “I could never imagine this happening. My team, they worked so hard to get us first place, which is amazing.
“Honestly, I was so tired (at the end) I just laid on the floor and, as teammates came through, someone said, ‘We won’ and we all started jumping around.”
Cigan was able to defend his title over the 4km race in a time of 14:39.96, which bettered his winning time of 17:53.53 from a year ago.
Meanwhile, the Villanova Wildcats finished seventh in novice boys’ team competition led by Colin Antonucci, who was 48th over the 4km course in 14:02.08.

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador Cross Country Running Championships
Held in Stephenville This Weekend
School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador will crown new Cross Country Running team and individual champions this coming weekend in Stephenville. Stephenville High School will host the races which will include more than 140 runners from across the province who have qualified through their regional qualification meets.
Champions will be declared in team events for Junior Girls, Junior Boys, Senior Girls and Senior Boys. The winning team from each regional will compete. In addition, the top 3 individuals from the regional competitions will also be involved in the race and will be competing for the individual title.
The Junior Girls race will be run over a 2000 m course. Teams racing include Cape John Collegiate (LaScie), Glovertown Academy, Mt Field Academy (Forteau), G.C. Rowe (Corner Brook) and Stephenville High. They will be joined by individuals from Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point), DC Young School (Port Hope Simpson), Sacred Heart School (Conche) and St. Edwards School (CBS).
The Junior Boys will race a 3000 m course. Teams competing for the championship banner include Glovertown Academy, Stephenville High, DC Young School, St. Annes Academy (Dunville and G.C. Rowe.. Runners competing for individual gold, silver and bronze include represent Pasadena Academy, Mobile High School, Dunne Academy (St. Marys), New World Island Academy (Summerford), St. Marys All Grade (Marys Harbour), Jane Collins Academy (Hare Bay) and Lewisporte Collegiate.
In the Senior Girls divisions the following teams will compete: St. Lawrence Academy, Baie Verte High, Corner Brook High, Carbonear Collegiate, Gander Collegiate, Canon Richards High (Flowers Cove), Stephenville High and Menihek High (Labrador City). They will run a 3000 m course and will be competing for individual honors against individual runners from Marystown Central High, MSB regional Academy (Middle Arm), Jane Collins Academy, Lester Pearson Memorial (Wesleyville) and O�Donel High (Mt Pearl).
The Senior Boys race is a 5000 m race. Team entries include Stephenville High, Roncalli High (Port Saunders), MSB Regional Academy, Glovertown Academy, St. Lawrence Academy, Bishops College and Menihek High. They will be joined by individual runners from Cape John Collegiate (LaScie), Holy Heart of mary (St. John�s), Corner Brook High, Henry Gordon Academy (Cartwright), DC Young, New World Island Academy, Fogo Island Central High, Roncalli (Avondale), Lester Pearson Memorial, Booth Memorial and Corner Brook High
The meet begins with a race tour and walk through at 10:30 a.m. The host school is also offering an elementary race on an exhibition basis, which goes ahead at 11. The junior girls race is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. followed by the junior boys at 12:00, senior girls at 12:30 and senior boys at 1:30. Each team consists of 5 runners. The finishing place of the top 4 runners will determine team points.
In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. Each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.
The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals and the top team in each division will receive the championship banner. Individual winners will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals.

Bluefield scored the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning to edge Three Oaks 3-2 in an exciting final to win the 2023 PEISAA Senior AAA Men’s Baseball Championship sponsored by PEI Mutual Insurance Company. Bluefield got by Morell and Three Oaks downed Rural earlier in the evening in the Semi Finals. Thanks to the City of Charlottetown for hosting the Provincials.

And so ends another year of scholastic volleyball in the NWT, but not before another big weekend of action in Yellowknife.
In the case of schools from the South Slave, it was definitely worth the trip to the capital.
Four of the eight banners up for grabs left for Hay River and Fort Smith following finals day on Sunday. Diamond Jenness Secondary School took home two of those four by winning the 15U girls and 19U girls championship contests in Tier 2.
The 15U girls managed to overcome Sir John Franklin High School of Yellowknife in a five-set battle; the ladies won the final set, 15-11, to set off some rather happy scenes at Weledeh Gymnasium.
It was a long weekend as the final for the ladies was their ninth game of the tournament, but that didn’t bother Kaiah Carter too much.
“It was well worth the trip,” she said following the final. “The legs are sore.”
Having to battle it out in a fifth and deciding set is usually a nerve-wracking experience for any team and Carter said that was no different for her team.
The difference was it was both a good and bad nerve-wracking experience.
“You’re close to the win but at the same time, if you lose, you worked so hard to get all this way and not get the win,” she said.
Winning gold was also good for Carter for another reason.
“It matches the colour of my room,” she said.
Kairyssa Jacobs also played on the victorious 15U squad and said the chalk talk between the fourth and fifth set was just about making sure they were ready.
“Just making sure we were switching our positions and preparing,” she said. “Going into a fifth set is scary, but it’s also exciting because anything can happen.”
One of the more impressive statistics from the final was the serving of Danica Ungar, who managed to get 38 serves over with no misses: nothing into the net and nothing long or wide.
Naturally, there was to be a celebration following the championship win and Jacobs knew exactly where she was going.
“Booster Juice,” she said. “I (had) two free drinks for being most valuable player, so that’s what I’m getting.:
The most valuable players from each team in every game was awarded a voucher from Booster Juice.
Diamond Jenness’ 19U girls outfit defeated Chief Albert Wright School of Tulita for its banner, while Ecole Boreale’s 19U boys squad won the Tier 2 banner over the Deline Lakers. Paul W. Kaeser High School of Fort Smith was the lone South Slave school to cop a Tier 1 banner thanks to the 19U girls team defeating Sir John Franklin, 3-1 in sets, in the final.
