Oakden, Vikings claim gold medal

Posted:

Hunter Oakden shot an 8-under 64 to win the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association boys’ provincial golf title at Oak Island Resort on Friday.

The Vincent Massey sophomore also gave his Vikings the eight-shot cushion they needed to claim the team title over St. Paul’s High School.

Massey’s Daylan Duncalfe shot 75, with Kale Jones carding 78 for a total of 1-over 217 while St. Paul’s finished at 225.

It’s the first Vikings golf banner since Hunter’s father, Dean, led the program to three consecutive championships from 1990 to 1992.

Jewel Lafleche led Jeanne-Sauve to the girls’ crown with an 86 to win the individual event by two.

Hunter Oakden also had the top score in Massey’s qualifying as 40 boys tried out for four spots. Oakden shot a 7-under 64 at Wheat City Golf Course to reach the zone championship. A day later, he shot 70 at Wheat City to beat Jones by one. Duncalfe fired 73, with Cole Lobreau shooting 74 to round out the squad.

At provincials, the top three of a team’s four scores count. However, Lobreau didn’t participate, leaving the Vikings without the buffer other teams had.

OFSAA Student-Athlete Sports Subsidy Appliciations Now Open

Student-Athlete Sports Subsidy

Participation in school sport is important and students learn many life skills, so we want all students to have equal opportunity to experience school sport. Thus OFSAA is offering fall, winter and spring grants for students who have difficulty finding the monies to pay their athletic fee for league competition.

*NEW* Online Submission Form – Please read the below information carefully.

    Important Information for schools:

    • The most current application form must be filled out in full, and then be uploaded to the online submission form to complete your application.
    • One online submission form must be completed per student grant request.
    • The committee will review each application carefully to determine grant eligibility. They will consider the social and economic barriers as identified in the application, so it is important that the parents include comprehensive information on their current financial situation.
    • The maximum amount a student may receive is $135, however it is based on the number of applications we receive.
    • Funds are limited, so schools should evaluate the students applying and submit forms for those that are most in need.
    • The endorser should be a person aware of the student’s financial situation and needs, and of the breakdown of the athletic fees (school and sport specific). An Athletic Director or Physical Education Department Head may best fit this role.
    • Funding is only approved for inter-school participation fees for regular league play. This grant is not intended to cover any costs associated with exhibition matches, tournament play, or additional costs incurred from qualifying for championships.
    • Only member schools and student-athletes of OFSAA qualify for the subsidy.
    • Upcoming application deadlines are:
      • Fall: October 31, 2025
      • Winter: January 31, 2026
      • Spring: April 30, 2026

The application form can be found here and must be used to apply for funds in 2025-26.

      • Automne:  31 octobre 2025
      • Hiver : 31 janvier 2026
      • Printemps : 30 avril 2026

SSNL Launches Safe Sport In Education Course

The Provincial Government is partnering with School Sports NL to launch the Safe Sport in Education course for NLSchools student athletes in grades 7-12.

The Safe Sport in Education course is locally developed and designed to equip students with the knowledge and tools to foster safer, more respectful sporting environments within their schools.

Starting this month, all NLSchools student athletes will be required to complete the Safe Sport in Education course and submit their course completion certificate along with a signed NLSchools and School Sports NL Athletic Contract in order to join team activities. The course will be available through the Centre for Distance Learning and Innovation (CDLI).

As this is the Year of Sport, this initiative aims to promote key values such as teamwork, good sportsmanship, ethics, inclusion, and safety in athletic programs in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Provincial Government supports opportunities to recognize and celebrate the many benefits of participating in school athletics. From fostering lifelong friendships to encouraging physical and mental well-being, sports play a vital role in schools and communities.

    Quotes
“As we continue to mark the Year of Sport in Newfoundland and Labrador, we are proud to launch the Safe Sport in Education course in partnership with School Sports NL. This locally developed program empowers our student athletes with the knowledge and tools to foster respectful, inclusive, and safe sporting environments. By embedding these values into school athletics, we’re not only enhancing the student experience but also strengthening the role of sport in our communities.”
    Honourable Bernard Davis
Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development

“Sport has the power to shape character and build community. By introducing the Safe Sport in Education course, we’re ensuring that student athletes not only grow in skill, but also in respect, inclusion, and integrity – values that will serve them well both on and off the field.”
    Honourable Fred Hutton
Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation

“As a long-standing partner in delivering school sport programs across Newfoundland and Labrador, School Sports NL is excited about the launch of the Safe Sport in Education course.
