41st Wade Hamer Challenge Cup Is In The Books!

Sir John, St Pat’s share Challenge Cup honours

The two Yellowknife high schools – École St Patrick and École Sir John Franklin – compete annually for male and female hockey titles at the city’s multiplex.

St Pat’s hockey captain Blake Rose scored a dramatic overtime goal to win the Wade Hamer Challenge Cup 7-6 on Wednesday, while Sir John’s girls were helped to the title by a Sadeè Walden hat-trick.

“I’m feeling great. I’m vibing to the music. I feel amazing,” said Walden after the game, which Sir John won 6-2.

Sir John girls Anna Aikman, Ria Rogers and Kaylee Fowler all scored goals in addition to Walden’s three. Alyssa Maurice and Addie Long scored for St Pat’s.

“We’ve been preparing since the start of the year. [It’s] a lot of hard work, waking up at 6am and doing workouts. I think it’s all been worth it, though,” Walden told Cabin Radio.

Rose, who scored the winning goal in the boys’ game with 6:50 left in overtime, said he was “feeling pretty crazy” after a close contest.

“I felt confident, to be honest. We had resilience. I’m proud of the boys for that,” he said.

In addition to Rose’s overtime goal, Nolan Dusome and Gavin Rose both scored twice for St Pat’s, while Marcus Vandermeer and Deacon Lantz each contributed one.

For Sir John boys, John Chorostkowski and Finley Stewart each scored twice alongside goals from Cormac Stewart and Will Avery.

From École St Patrick High School Facebook: our girls may have lost to our friends at École Sir John Franklin High School but they made us proud in their grit, positive attitudes, and the grace they carried themselves with. We love their sportsmanship and are so lucky to have them representing our school on and off the ice.

The boys’ game was a nail biter, going into sudden death overtime, but our (crew won out with a score that will go down in history… 6-7!

Thank you to the staff who coached, set up, supervised and cleaned up, and to the students who were on the ice and in the stands. A big thank you to ESJF for hosting this year’s Wade Hamer Challenge Cup.

We’ll keep it nice and shiny while’s it’s home with us.

OFSAA Says Goodbye to Bob Hancock

Past and present staff of OFSAA were saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Hancock in Orillia on November 13th, 2025.

Bob was a former OFSAA 100m hurdle champion who went on to become a dedicated elementary teacher with the Toronto District School Board. Post retirement, he served on the OFSAA staff as a Special Projects Officer/Sport Coordinator for cross country, track & field and alpine skiing.

Known by many as “The Voice” in track & field and cross country circles, Bob spent many hours announcing track events across Ontario and Canada.

OFSAA extends our deepest condolences to Bob’s family and his many friends.

Remembering Larry Lafrentz

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to one of our former SHSAA Executive Directors, Larry Lafrentz (December 30, 1953 – November 12, 2025).

Born in Estevan, Larry attended Immaculate Heart High School before graduating from Estevan Collegiate. He earned his education degree from the University of Regina and began a career that would impact the lives of countless students, athletes, and colleagues over more than three decades.

Larry taught for fourteen years in Gull Lake where he also served as Athletic Director (1976-1990). His involvement with athletics extended to most high school sports. His teams displayed sportsmanship combined with excellence on the fields of play. He coached the Gull Lake Lions football team and the Gull Lake Lionettes/Lions basketball teams and had very impressive records, earning several provincial medals. Larry’s talents also extended to officiating where he was a respected official in football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and fastball; he shared this expertise when not coaching. Larry was not only viewed as an excellent coach by his students but as a teacher who was interested and cared about them. His office door was always open, and students were always there sharing their experiences with him.

Larry’s District involvement while teaching and coaching included two years as Officials’ Commissioner and four years as President of South West Athletic Conference (SWAC). During his time in Gull Lake, he also served two terms as Section I Representative on the SHSAA Executive Council (1978-80 and 1982-84) prior to becoming President of the Association (1988-90).

Larry accepted the position of Assistant Executive Director of the SHSAA in 1990. He assumed the role of Executive Director in 2003, serving the Association until his retirement in 2008. In these positions, Larry became a guiding voice for high school athletics across the province, helping to shape the experience of thousands of young athletes and the teacher-coaches who supported them. He believed deeply in the power of athletics to build character, community, and lifelong friendships.

In his retirement, he cherished time with his family and friends, often found at the golf course, volunteering in the community, or cheering on the sidelines of his grandchildren’s activities.

Bryan Matheson and Kevin Vollet, Former Executive Directors of SHSAA, had the following to say, “It was a pleasure working with Larry who shared the passion for school sport with so many of his colleagues. Larry always worked to make things better for the student-athletes in our province.”

Larry is survived by his wife, Sherri, daughter Lacy (Matt), son Byron (Stephanie), grandchildren Emery, Nora, Lyla, and Luka, and his SHSAA family.
