Thursday May 23 – LTP 506C: Legal Issues II – Enhanced Legal Issues
This course covers legal aspects such as discrimination, harassment, bullying, hazing, and violence in sports, providing participants with definitions and applications within both sports and scholastic environments. It also addresses emerging online issues like cyberbullying, online privacy, defamation, and coach-athlete relationships on social media platforms, offering insights on effective management. Additionally, participants will learn about employment law practices related to teacher and volunteer coach relationships.

Monday May 27 – LTP 501C: Philosophy, Organizational Structure & Professional Development
This course is aimed at assisting athletic directors set the tone for their program. Origins of athletic administration are addressed in addition to codes of ethics. The concept of “educational athletics” is discussed and refined. The role of the athletic administrator and the importance of having a school philosophy are addressed and workshop participants have the opportunity to interact with others to refine their own philosophies.
**LTP 501C is the one of three fundamental courses required for the CRAA Certification

Thursday May 30 – LTP 602C: Creating Your Athletic Handbook
This course is designed to guide attendees through the process of creating a complete and effective athletic handbook. Effective athletic handbooks provide vision/direction for your program, disseminate critical information to your constituents and can save Athletic Administrators countless hours. This is a working course where attendees will be provided with a number of templates as a starting point and surrounded by experienced Athletic Administrators leading the course. Attendees will be expected to come prepared with a list of school and district-specific documents to guide them during the handbook creation process.

Wednesday June 5 – LTP 726C: Student Leadership Development
Student Leadership Development is an essential component to any successful education-based athletic program. In this course, we’ll look at numerous ways to actively develop leaders who will serve your school as well as the greater community. Topics that will be covered include: captains council, student leadership workshops, service learning, and further opportunities to develop Student Leadership.

BCSS Announces 2024 Award Winners

Burnaby, BC – BC School Sports is pleased to announce the 2024 BCSS Award winners recognizing individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and dedication to fostering student-athletes in their pursuit of sport excellence.

These awards aim to honour those whose tireless efforts behind the scenes contribute significantly to the growth, development, and success of student-athletes, both onand off the field of play.

BCSS Executive Director, Jordan Abney said “It is such a privilege to celebrate these incredible individuals. They have dedicated so much to supporting school sports and changing the lives of hundreds, if not thousands of student-athletes. They are truly the very best of the school sport community.”

The Awards Ceremony will take place on May 10th in Kelowna, where recipients will be honoured for their exceptional contributions. BC School Sports extends its congratulations to all the 2024 award winners who have played a part in supporting student-athletes on their journey.

The Honour Award is the highest form of distinction BCSS can bestow upon an individual. This award is presented to an individual in recognition of a lifetime of service to school sports. The recipient is an individual who has demonstrated prolonged and distinguished service to BC School Sports, their zone, local association, and school. This person has made a significant difference to BCSS and the impact it
has on the lives of student-athletes and our member schools.

Honour Award:
Paul Thiessen (Okanagan Mission Secondary, Kelowna, BC)

The Women in Sport & Leadership Award is to recognize the service and leadership of women in school sports. The recipient is a role model to colleagues and student athletes alike. The recipient has made a tangible impact on school sport and has demonstrated commitment to their student-athletes, their school, and their sport.

Women in Sport & Leadership:
Breanne Quist (Nanaimo Christian School)

The Media Person of the Year recognizes an individual in the media who has highlighted and celebrated school sport in their reporting. The nominee has continued to bring attention to BCSS, its member schools and student-athletes by showcasing the very best of school sport in BC. The recipient may be employed by traditional media outlets, but those who use blogs, social media, podcasts, or other
emerging platforms to consistently promote school sports may be considered.

Media Person of the Year Award:
Mark Booth (Delta Optimist)

The Inspirational School recognizes a school whose special commitment to improving the lives of student-athletes and staff through leadership and public service. This school has contributed significantly to the welfare of school athletics and the local community.

Inspirational School:
Sullivan Heights Secondary (Surrey, BC)

The Citation of Excellence in Coaching recognizes outstanding coaches and their distinguished contributions to their sport and athletes. The recipient of this award guides student-athletes to success through the philosophy of fair play and sportsmanship for a sustained period, while displaying values consistent with BCSS and school sport.

Where: Canadian Mennonite University, 600 Shaftesbury Blvd.

Sport Manitoba is proud to host our first Safe Sport Summit! Titled Building a Safer and Stronger Sport Culture, the 2024 Sport Manitoba Summit will bring together sport administrators, coaches, parents, officials, athletes, and volunteers from across all sports in Manitoba. The event will include professional development opportunities, presentations, engagement activities, and resources that will assist all stakeholders in establishing a safe and sustainable sport culture.

The Summit is an opportunity for all participants to learn from others, discuss current topics, and ensure that leaders in the province’s sport system have the knowledge and the tools to provide quality sport experiences to all Manitobans.

Registration is completely free and food/beverages will be provided both days.

About Our Keynote Speaker, Allison Forsyth

Generation Safe founder, Allison Forsyth, is the leader in ground-breaking education and awareness in the Canadian safe sport landscape. Allison’s ‘real-talk’ educational approach has resonated with over 50 sport organizations and thousands of people nationwide.

Recently recognized in the ‘Top 25 Women of Influence in Canada in 2023’, Allison’s guiding principles have been instrumental in helping organizations turn their safe sport policies into practice. Allison previously co-founded ITP Sport, Canada’s only full-service safe sport programming and consulting agency.

The 2-time Olympian and 8-time National Champion (alpine skiing) offers a unique and critical perspective as a survivor of sexual abuse in the sport system. Recently having taken a role with Canada Soccer as their Safe Sport Officer, Allison will serve to ensure a trauma-informed systemic implementation of safe sport practices and procedures from the national to grassroots level.

The New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association is pleased to be hosting the 2024 Excellence Awards Banquet in Fredericton! Invited students and guests are invited to join us at the University of New Brunswick at the Wu Centre on April 25th 2024. Emery Johnson Memorial Award

This award goes to the Most Sportsmanlike Coach of the Year and recognizes their outstanding lifetime achievements towards students and the NBIAA school sports programs. This award is named after Emery Johnson, the former athletic director of Dalhousie Regional High School and the NBIAA Executive Committee, who passed away in November 2003.

In 2014, the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association introduced an annual School Sportsmnship of the Year Awards.
