Prix d’excellence Raymond – Légère Excellence Award

23 élèves-athlètes ont été sélectionnés parmi les quatre conférences de l’ASINB pour recevoir le prix d’excellence Raymond Légère. Ce prix porte le nom de Raymond Légère, dont l’amour pour l’entraînement n’était éclipsé que par son amour pour l’éducation physique et les valeurs qu’elle enseigne aux jeunes. Ces élèves-athlètes seront honorés jeudi prochain lors du 18e banquet annuel de remise des prix, qui se tiendra à Fredericton.

Félicitations

23 student-athletes were selected from the four conferences of the NBIAA to be awarded the Raymond Légère Excellence Award. This award is named after Raymond Légère, whose love for coaching was only overshadowed by his love of physical education and the values it taught young people. These student athletes will be honoured next Thursday at the 18th Annual Awards Banquet, held in Fredericton.

Hockey legend Eric Lindros, and motivational speakers Andrew E. Guy and Shireen Ahmed headlined this year’s Forum. Thank you to all of the speakers for providing compelling stories to 104 classrooms and 2,200 plus students over the course of 3 days (March 24-26).

BCSS Announces 2025 Award Winners

Burnaby, BC – BC School Sports is pleased to announce its 2025 BCSS Awards winners. These awards honour exceptional individuals and school who have gone above and beyond their commitment to student-athletes and the school sport community in British Columbia.

The depth and quality of this year’s honourees speak volumes about strength of the school sport community and the dedication of those who support it. From the tireless coaches and officials to the visionary leaders, these individuals embody the value of school sport.

“It is such a privilege to recognize the very best in school sport across British Columbia,” stated Executive Director Jordan Abney. “Educational athletics provides meaningful opportunities to more than 120,000 student-athlete registrations each year. This system thrives because of dedicated volunteers and servant leaders.” Abney continued, “The 2025 BCSS Award winners are an exceptional group who have devoted decades to supporting youth through educational athletics. I offer my sincere congratulations on this well-earned recognition, and my deepest thanks for their outstanding leadership and service.”

Honourees will be celebrated at the BCSS Awards dinner on May 9th in Kelowna, where they will be recognized for their outstanding contributions. BC School Sports congratulates all the 2025 award winners and thanks them for the invaluable impact they have made on student-athletes and the school sport community.

Award Winners

The Honour Award is the highest form of distinction BCSS can bestow upon an individual. This award is presented to an individual in recognition of a lifetime of service to school sports. The recipient is an individual who has demonstrated prolonged and distinguished service to BC School Sports, their zone, local association, and school. The honouree has made a significant difference to BCSS and the impact
it has on the lives of student-athletes and our member schools.
Louise Holmes (Duchess Park Secondary)

The Most Inspirational School recognizes a school whose special commitment to
improving the lives of student-athletes and staff through leadership and public
service. This school has contributed significantly to the welfare of school athletics and
the local community.
Nanaimo Christian School (Nanaimo)

The Media Person of the Year recognizes an individual in the media who has highlighted and celebrated school sport in their reporting. The nominee has continued to bring attention to BCSS, its member schools and student-athletes by showcasing the very best of school sport in BC. The recipient may be employed by traditional media outlets, but those who use blogs, social media, podcasts, or other
emerging platforms to consistently promote school sports may be considered.

The Women in Sport & Leadership Award is to recognize the service and leadership of women in school sports. The recipient is a role model to colleagues and studentathletes alike. The recipient has made a tangible impact on school sport and has demonstrated commitment to their student-athletes, their school, and their sport.
Michelle Nederlof (Duncan Christian School)

The Citation of Excellence in Coaching recognizes outstanding coaches and their
distinguished contributions to their sport and athletes. The recipient of this award
guides student-athletes to success through the philosophy of fair play and
sportsmanship for a sustained period, while displaying values consistent with BCSS
and school sport.

Jill Fougner (Brentwood College)

The Citation of Excellence Award in Officiating recognizes outstanding individuals and their distinguished contributions to the officiating of school sport. The recipient of this award has demonstrated outstanding commitment to school sport, being recognized as a quality official, while displaying the values of BCSS and fair play.
Angelo Pulice (Soccer)

The Citation of Excellence Award in Administration recognizes the invaluable contributions from administrators to school sport. The recipient has shown demonstrable leadership and sustainable support to athletic programs, athletic directors and coaches while contributing to the promotion and enhancement of athletic programs and the student-athlete experience at the school and/or district level.
Phil Ohl (Spectrum Community School)

The Citation of Excellence as an Athletic Director recognizes the outstanding individuals for excellence as an athletic director and the hard work and dedication shown to improve the student-athlete experience, enhance the school’s athletic program, and build the school community at large. The Athletic Director leads by example and consistently demonstrates the values of their school and BC School Sports while finding new creative ways to support their coaches and student-athletes

In the world of elite sports, the focus has traditionally been on performance metrics, rigorous training regimens, and strategies for winning. But what if the secret to sustained success lies not just in physical prowess, but in the mind? Enter positive psychology, a field that seeks to unlock human potential by fostering mental resilience, well-being, and personal growth.

Dr. Linda Pagani, a professor at the University of Montreal’s School of Psychoeducation, describes positive psychology as more than just an optimistic outlook.

“The real title should be ‘the science of human well-being and potential,’” she explains.

Unlike traditional psychology, which often centers around diagnosing and treating mental illness, positive psychology focuses on cultivating strengths, coping strategies, and resilience. In the context of sports, this approach can be a game-changer.

Beyond the game: The science of well-being

At its core, positive psychology is about identifying and amplifying the traits that help individuals thrive. “It’s about character strengths, recognizing what’s in our control, and learning to match coping strategies with perceived stressors,” says Pagani. In a high-pressure environment like competitive sports, athletes often face moments of self-doubt, anxiety, and mental fatigue. Traditional sports psychology has long addressed these issues through techniques like visualization, self-talk, and mindfulness. Positive psychology, however, adds another dimension, it actively encourages athletes to focus on growth rather than just results.

Pagani emphasizes that the role of the present moment is crucial. “Positive psychology places a great emphasis on being in the now, it’s more important than the past or future,” she says. For athletes, this mindset shift can be transformative. When performance anxiety creeps in before a major event, gratitude can serve as an anchor. “I tell my athletes, when you start to lose the thread, focus on something you’re grateful for,” she explains. “Gratitude brings you back to the moment.”

From winning to growing: A shift in perspective

The traditional athlete’s mindset is often goal-oriented: training to win, striving for personal bests, and chasing podium finishes. But according to Pagani, the most successful athletes don’t focus solely on winning. Instead, they embrace the idea of personal growth.

“We’re not here just to win a competition,” she says. “We’re here to grow. Every day, every minute, everything we do is about promoting growth.”

This philosophy aligns with what sports psychologists call the “growth mindset.” Athletes who see setbacks as learning opportunities rather than failures are more likely to persevere and ultimately achieve success. By reframing mistakes as stepping stones rather than obstacles, positive psychology helps athletes build resilience and maintain motivation over the long term.

Pagani uses the concept of the “hero’s journey” to illustrate this idea. “When you see yourself as the hero in your own story, you start to pay attention to all the little things that happen… the lessons in failure, the small wins, the journey itself,” she explains. This approach fosters a mindset where both victories and challenges contribute to an athlete’s personal development.

The role of coaches: Building positive team culture

In team sports, the principles of positive psychology extend beyond individual performance, they shape the collective mindset of a team. Coaches play a critical role in fostering a culture of well-being, motivation, and cohesion. “A coach’s job isn’t just about developing technical skills,” Pagani says. “It’s about creating an environment where players feel connected, valued, and engaged.”

One strategy is what Pagani calls “practicing positive emotions.” She encourages athletes to actively seek moments of joy in their daily routines. “I ask my athletes to find one small moment of joy each day, whether it’s the smell of coffee in the morning or a laugh shared with a teammate. The more you look for joy, the more you experience it.”

This technique is particularly effective in strengthening team dynamics. When athletes develop an appreciation for the small, positive moments in their sport, they become more engaged and present in both training and competition. This sense of connection enhances overall team morale and improves performance.

Character strengths: The key to long-term success

One of the fundamental aspects of positive psychology is the recognition of individual character strengths. According to Pagani, every person possesses 24 unique character strengths, but 5 tend to stand out as defining traits. What she calls “signature strengths.”

“For me, my top 5 strengths are critical thinking, curiosity, creativity, appreciation of beauty and excellence, and kindness,” she shares. Identifying and cultivating these strengths allows athletes to approach their sport with greater self-awareness and purpose. When athletes understand their core strengths, they can leverage them to enhance performance, manage adversity, and maintain motivation.

Ultimately, positive psychology in sport is about more than just improving athletic performance, it’s about fostering a mindset that allows individuals to thrive in all areas of life. By shifting the focus from winning to growth, from pressure to presence, and from fear to resilience, athletes can tap into their full potential both on and off the field.

As Pagani puts it: “Once you start embracing this mindset, you realize, wow, my perspective is completely different. And that changes everything.”

Huge congrats to Summer Murray, the ASAA Female Athlete of the Month sponsored by Alberta Milk for March!

Her incredible contributions to basketball have been instrumental in leading her team to an outstanding 23-5 record as they head into hosting 1A Provincials at OKCS. Currently ranked #1 in the province, Summer’s performance has been nothing short of exceptional.

A key moment was her dominant performance against the previously top-ranked Stirling, where she secured the #1 spot with an impressive 24 points, including 6 three-pointers, along with 5 assists and 8 rebounds!

Throughout the season, Summer has consistently earned MVP and Player of the Game awards while competing against tough 2A teams across the province. Her dedication and skill are truly remarkable.

Congratulations to our March Athletes of the Month Sophie and Colton.

Sophie is a leader and a mentor to her teammates on and off the playing surface. Sophie is a very competitive, determined and committed athlete who has had the role of captain on multiple teams.

Sophie can be found many mornings at 7am in the gym working on her skills for that seasons sport as well as working with younger teammates. Sophie has been part of the Special Olympics team as a mentor and a Unified player for the past six years as well as an active member of student council.

Colton has a great work ethic and attitude when it comes to sports. He works hard when he is on the course, field, or ice. Colton is supportive of teammates, and he always does what his coaches ask of him. He has served as Assistant Captain Hockey team, a role he took very seriously. He has represented Nackawic High with class and integrity.

Congratulations to both athletes and thank you to the coaches and staff for taking the time to acknowledge these amazing students.

Les championnats provinciaux de futsal scolaire division 3, présentés par MASS Canada, se sont déroulés les 28, 29 et30 mars 2025 dans 4 régions différentes du Québec; en Mauricie, au Lac-Saint-Louis et Laurentides-Lanaudière pour les catégories masculines et dans l’Est-du-Québec pour les catégories féminines.

Futsal scolaire benjamin féminin et masculin division 3

Du côté féminin, ce sont deux équipes de l’Académie Saint-Louis qui se retrouvent en grande finale provinciale. L’Arsenal 1 (QCA) ont réussi à mettre la main sur le titre de championnes provinciales à l’aide d’une victoire de 4-1 face à sa rivale de la 2^e équipe de l’Arsenal. La finale de bronze opposait les Knights de St. Thomas (GMAA) aux Aigles du Collège Jean-Eudes (MTL). Les Aigles ont réussi à obtenir la médaille de bronze avec une victoire de 4-1.

En masculin, les Frégates (QCA) de l’École secondaire Samuel-de-Champlain affrontaient la Polyvalente Le Carrefour (OUT) en grande finale provinciale. Les Frégates ont réussi à mettre la main sur le titre de champions provinciaux à l’aide d’une victoire de 4-2. La finale de bronze opposait les Cactus du Collège Notre-Dame (MTL) aux Mustangs de l’É.S. Mont-Royal (LSL). Les Mustangs ont réussi à obtenir la médaille de bronze avec une victoire de 2-1.

Futsal scolaire cadet féminin et masculin division 3

Au niveau du féminin, le Collège Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes (MRG) et le Juvénat Notre-Dame (QCA) s’affrontent en grande finale provinciale. Les Prédateurs ont réussi à mettre la main sur le titre de championnes provinciales à l’aide d’une victoire de 5-2. La finale de bronze opposait Vincent-Massey (GMAA) et L’Arsenal de l’Académie Saint-Louis (QCA). Les Rams ont réussi à obtenir la médaille de bronze avec une victoire de 3-2.

Du côté masculin, l’École secondaire François-Bourrin (QCA) affrontait le Collège Laval (LAV) en grande finale provinciale. Les Centurions ont réussi à mettre la main sur le titre de champions provinciaux à l’aide d’une victoire de 6-1. La finale de bronze opposait l’École secondaire Paul-Hubert (EQ) à l’École secondaire Jean-Baptiste-Meilleur (LL). Le Sélect a réussi à obtenir la médaille de bronze avec une victoire de 6-3.

En féminin, le Collège Sainte-Anne (LSL) et le Collège Jean-de-la-Mennais (MRG) s’affrontent en grande finale provinciale. Les Dragons ont réussi à mettre la main sur le titre de championnes provinciales à l’aide d’une victoire de 3-2. La finale de bronze opposait l’École secondaire Samuel-de-Champlain (QCA) et le Collège Laval (LAV). Les Frégates ont réussi à obtenir la médaille de bronze avec une victoire de 3-2 en prolongation.

Et en masculin, l’École secondaire Samuel-de-Champlain (QCA) affrontait le Collège Jean-de-la-Mennais (MRG) en grande finale provinciale. Les Frégates ont réussi à mettre la main sur le titre de champions provinciaux à l’aide d’une victoire de 4-1. La finale de bronze opposait le Collège Letendre (LAV) à L’Académie Saint-Louis (QCA). L’Arsenal a réussi à obtenir la médaille de bronze avec une victoire de 4-3 en prolongation.
