Holland Hurricanes Partner with PEISAA to Host Provincial Championships

Pictured above are Left, Albert Roache, Director, Athletics and Recreation at Holland College and right, Mike Connolly, PEISAA School Sport Coordinator sealing the agreement at the Holland College gym.

The Holland Hurricanes are thrilled to announce an exciting new partnership with the PEI School Athletic Association (PEISAA), solidifying an agreement to host the Senior Provincial Championships for A, AA, and AAA Volleyball and Basketball at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown through 2027.

As part of this agreement, the PEISAA will have access to the Hurricanes’ gymnasium, locker rooms, and viewing areas, with support from Hurricanes staff to ensure a seamless event experience. Holland College students will also play an integral role, serving as hosts and gaining valuable hands-on experience in event management during these championships.

“We’ve had a strong relationship with the PEISAA for many years, and this partnership is a natural extension of that connection,” says Albert Roche, Holland College’s Director of Athletics and Recreation. “Our facilities provide an ideal setting for showcasing the province’s top volleyball and basketball talent, while our students and staff benefit from being directly involved in hosting these prestigious events. After the tremendous success of the volleyball championships this fall, we’re eagerly anticipating the basketball championships in March.”

The volleyball championships were held across three dates in November and proved to be a resounding success. Spectators filled the stands, enjoying games from multiple bleachers and the overhead walking track. Student-athletes and coaches appreciated the large, modern gym and spacious locker rooms, which set the stage for memorable competitions.

The upcoming basketball championships will return to Holland College in March 2025, following a similar format over three days. This partnership marks a three-year agreement with options to expand and host additional events.

“We are excited to partner with Holland College and host our Provincial Championships in such a high-quality facility,” says Mike Connolly, PEISAA Coordinator. “The venue allows for more spectators and provides spacious, comfortable amenities for teams, elevating the overall experience of our events. This collaboration aligns perfectly with our commitment to providing the best possible opportunities for student-athletes.”

The Holland Hurricanes are proud to support youth sports and look forward to welcoming PEISAA athletes, coaches, and fans to our campus. Together, we aim to create unforgettable championship experiences for everyone involved.

Athlete of the Month – November 2024

Congratulations to our athletes of the month for October, Jacey and Jack from St Stephen High School.

It’s Jacey Calder’s senior season, and she’s working to make her fourth year the best yet. Building a legacy as the defending AA champion is a big demand on and off the court, but Jacey is up to the task. She’s showing great tenacity by completing 13 rebounds per league game. She also takes on increased offensive responsibilities and strives to mentor her new teammates. She is a stable and reassuring influence for her teammates in training and in the game. Always brave, she’s a tough defender and a key player for a women’s team that’s ranked first in the southern conference.

Jack Huys had an outstanding season for the Spartans going for more than 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns. His performances have been recognized as he was named Co-Offensive Player of the Year for the NBIAA 9-Man League. He didn’t stop once the season ended came and the Spartans headed back to the playoffs. In the Spartans 45-14 semifinal win over the Simonds Seabees, Jack’s performance, who traveled 211 yards and recorded three touchdowns, propelled the team to its first championship game since 2018. In the finals on Nov. 9, Jack maintained his high level of play by traveling 233 yards and scoring 2 touchdowns as the Spartans defeated the Harbour View Vikings 38-12 to win their third provincial banner. Jack Huys was an exceptional athlete on the field and a remarkable leader in training. Jack is also a key member of the Spartans hockey team. In his third year in the team, Jack has taken on a leadership role and is vice-captain. His size and speed make him difficult to contain and he is a threat every time he steps on the ice, as he can punish you offensively or severely fail.

Congratulations to both athletes and thank you coaches and staff for taking the time to recognize these amazing students.

Congratulations to our November 2024 Athlete of the Month Presented by @BCMilk, Eloise Williams-Walshe from @Crofton_House! #BCSSAthleteOfTheMonth

Congratulations to our November 2024 Athlete of the Month Presented by @BCMilk, Micah Snobelen from Kalamalka. Swipe to read about his accomplishments the past month!

Congratulations to Makenzie Lea Wolf from Paul Rowe Jr/Sr High School, a dynamic volleyball player whose versatility and leadership shine!

At just 5’3”, Makenzie excelled as a libero this season, covering the court with ease, digging out tough hits, and rarely missing a serve-receive. When called to the front row, her precision allowed her to score against even triple blocks. Her ability to play both outside hitter and libero made her a key asset to her team’s success.

More than her skills, Makenzie uplifted her teammates, inspiring them to perform at their best and pushing the team further with her unwavering drive and positivity.

Congratulations, Makenzie, on this well-deserved recognition!
