Athlete of the Month – December 2025

School Sport Alberta’s Male Athlete of the Month!

Congratulations to Jeremiah for being named Athlete of the Month sponsored by Alberta Milk!!

Jeremiah played a pivotal role in Austin O’Brien’s 4A Provincial Championship run, delivering one of the season’s most memorable moments: a game-winning 90-yard touchdown with just two minutes remaining on a critical 3rd-and-10 from his own 20-yard line.

Throughout the entire provincial run, Jeremiah made an impact on both sides of the ball as a receiver and defensive back, showcasing elite versatility, leadership, and commitment to his team. A standout performer, he was equally respected as a teammate and leader within the program.

As Athlete of the Month, Jeremiah receives a certificate, a $50 gift card, and an Alberta Milk toque!

Congratulations to our New Brunswick High School Sports Athletes of the Month for November, Janessa and Caleb.

Janessa is a dedicated athlete and excellent student who has managed to balance studies, sports and other extracurricular activities throughout the school year. This year, she was named co-captain of the senior girls soccer team and captain of the HCS senior girls basketball. In the fall, Janessa participated in the SSNB women’s golf tournament and in the spring, she will be one of the senior leaders on the HCS volleyball and track teams. One of Janessa’s greatest strengths is her commitment to progress and her willingness to take on challenges. Janessa is actively seeking advice and looking to improve, often finding extra time to practice before and after school. She never gives up and always gives her all, which leads to an outstanding season.

Caleb excels in both sports and academics. In his sports he will give 100% every game and practice and continue to improve with each presence on the field. With Caleb, the team always comes first and he will always do what is best for the team. Caleb is always respectful to others at school and in sports. He’s been a part of the SSNB baseball championship team for the past 2 years and even pitched in the championship game without giving a safe hit. He won the SSNB basketball championship last year. She has also been a part of the ESA senior volleyball team since 10th grade.

Congratulations to both athletes and thank you coaches and staff for taking the time to recognize these amazing students.

Mia McGee-Gallant, a member of the Ch’town Rural Women’s AAA Basketball team. Mia is a welcomed addition to the team this year as she made an immediate impact as soon as she put on the Raider jersey. Despite being in Grade ten, Mia brings up the level of play of the team. She averaged 16 points per game in December, with notable performances against Carleton North and CEC where she had 24 and 21 points respectively. In addition to her offensive performance, Mia is one of the best defensive players on the team; she is often tasked with guarding the stronger players on opposing teams. She carries herself with quiet and humble confidence, leading by example as she is constantly trying to improve her game!

PEISAA December Sr Male

Nate Rist a member of our AAA Men’s volleyball team and a current member of our AAA Men’s basketball team.

Leading the Bobcats to a blazing 4-0 start while averaging 29.8 pts and more than 10 rebounds per game, including a recent 41 pt performance in 30 minutes of action to get the win vs defending champs Three Oaks.

His length, speed, and leadership amongst his teammates make him a true standout presence in the league.

“He has the ability to guard multiple positions, rebound and score at a high level, as well as shoot from anywhere on the floor, while showcasing a true love of the game.” Said coach Matt McKenna.

The Bobcats go as he goes and he has been effective in leading his teammates to success and great improvement this season.

NWTT Teacher Award from the Indigenous Sport Circle of the Northwest Territories

Honouring a Teacher Who Builds More Than Teams

 December 8, 2025

Northwest Territories Teachers’ Association Teacher Award

Giovanni Akeson – Chief Jimmy Bruneau School, Behchoko

Giovanni Akeson is a dedicated teacher at Chief Jimmy Bruneau School who has transformed youth recreation in Behchokǫ̀. He created the community’s first Learn to Skate and Learn Hockey programs, supporting more than 100 youth with inclusive access, equipment, and sledge hockey opportunities. His leadership strengthens confidence, healthy living, and community connection for young people across Tłı̨chǫ territory.

When Gio arrived in the community, he did not wait long to get involved. Almost immediately, he began building something many students and families had not experienced in years, the return of hockey to the community.

This year, Gio’s impact was formally recognized when he received the NWTT Teacher Award from the Indigenous Sport Circle of the Northwest Territories. The award highlights educators who go above and beyond to support Indigenous youth through sport, leadership, and community connection. It is a fitting recognition for someone whose work reaches far beyond the classroom.

Hockey had been largely absent from the community for nearly a generation. For many youth, there were no regular opportunities to skate, practice, or play. Gio stepped in with a simple but powerful goal, to bring hockey back and make it inclusive for everyone.

What began as a small effort grew into a full program. Hockey now runs four to five days a week, supported by tireless fundraising and community involvement. One of the most meaningful accomplishments was the creation of a sledge hockey program. Through fundraising and support, twelve sleds were purchased, making the sport accessible to youth with physical disabilities.

Fridays are now dedicated to sledge hockey, and the program has even become part of school life. Gio worked with the school to integrate the program through field trips and learning on the ice. Students are not just learning skills. They are learning confidence, teamwork, and inclusion.

Before coming north, Gio had built and led a sledge hockey program in another community for several years. Leaving that behind was not easy, but he arrived determined to begin again. And he did.

One of Gio’s greatest successes is how he made the program sustainable. A local board was created for Teach a Wild Hockey, involving teachers from both schools, RCMP members, and community partners. Over time, leadership transitioned into local hands. Today, the program is mainly run by community members.

From the very beginning, Gio believed this program should belong to the community. His role was not to own it, but to grow it, support it, and eventually step back so it could thrive on its own.

Those who work alongside Gio talk often about the impact he has beyond the rink. Students light up when they see him. His patience and kindness are consistently mentioned. His presence creates safety, encouragement, and belief.

And that is why this award matters.

The Indigenous Sport Circle NWT Teacher Award recognizes more than coaching or programming. It celebrates how educators use sport to lift young people, strengthen communities, and build lasting opportunity. Teachers like Gio are not just delivering curriculum. They are shaping futures.

Congratulations to Gio on this well-deserved honour. And thank you for reminding us that when teachers lead with care and commitment, sport becomes something far bigger than a game.
